Voices from the Grassroots: Importance of demand-driven and participatory school budget

In this video, the members of two learning collaboratives from Sreemangal and Saghata upazilas led by IID express their concerns and commitments regarding the school budget. Even though the education policy of Bangladesh encourages stakeholders from various levels, including parents, to participate in the budget formulation process, in reality the situation might be different. In most rural areas, the parents lack awareness regarding the school budget. One of the reasons for this is the irregularity of teacher-student meetings. In many cases, due to time limitations, it is not possible to prepare a demand letter for a budget following the policy. That is why it is important to raise awareness and strengthen the voices of the grassroots. With this view, two learning collaboratives have been formed with the commitment to arrange regular meetings with public representatives, teachers, parents, and other stakeholders to ensure participatory demand-based budgeting at the school level. The LC is formed under IID’s ongoing ‘e!quality’ project, with the support of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE).
